Article 209 of Iran’s Constitution states that woman's life is valued only half as much as a man's life. A
convicted man who has intentionally slain a woman is subject to execution only after the payment of
"Deyeh" by the family of the victim. "Deyeh" is defined as a sum of money that the victim's family has to
pay to the assailant's family for the physical damages, dismemberment, or death of the assailant.

Iran’s Parliament adopted a law, in April of 1998, to fully segregate the health care system for women and
girls. This law has seriously compromised women’s health because there are not enough trained female
physicians and health care professionals to meet the needs of all the women and girls in Iran. The same
law also points to another new law of prohibiting the discussion of women’s issues or rights outside the
interpretation of Shari’a (Islamic law). Women’s rights can only be discussed by religious male figures in
Iran.

Family courts do not provide women any protection from abusive husbands. The plight of the Iranian
women is depicted in the story of a woman saying:

"I was married at the age of 12, and I had my first child when I was 13. My husband was unemployed and we fought all the time. We never applied for a divorce because I was afraid of losing my child. Finally one night, he poured a bucket of acid over my body and I was completely burned. When I rushed to the sink to flush my face and body.  I realized that he had shut off the main water supply. I was taken to the hospital. My operation was held up pending advance money for the surgery, and permission from my husband to operate on my face. My mother sold all of her valuables and provided the money. My husband said he would only permit my operation if I consented to not seeing my children for the rest of my life.  Finally, with hospital's pressure on the family court they allowed me to receive the operation on my face and body. "

Article 105 of the Civil Code "In the relationship between a man and a woman, the man is responsible
as head of the family." The Council of Guardians, has decreed, "A woman cannot leave her home without
her husband's permission, even to attend her father's funeral".

Article 114 of Iran’s Civil codes states: When rajm [stoning] is being administered on a man he must be
placed in a pit almost down to his waist, and when administered on a woman she must be placed in a pit
almost down to her chest. Such barbaric behavior by the regime includes dictating the style, size and the
administration of stoning while differentiating between male vs. female victims. Female victim up to her
neck to avoid physical escape, however, even if condemned female victim is able to flee the scene,
authorities are obliged to arrest her and execute her by firing squad. As for the male victims, they are
buried up to their waist and if able to escape the scene no further punishment awaits them.

So the first thing i came across was this article of yahoo... http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090929/ap_on_re_us/us_baby_sitter_backlash_mich

"IRVING TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Each day before the school bus comes to pick up the neighborhood's children, Lisa Snyder did a favor for three of her fellow moms, welcoming their children into her home for about an hour before they left for school.
Regulators who oversee child care, however, don't see it as charity. Days after the start of the new school year, Snyder received a letter from the Michigan Department of Human Services warning her that if she continued, she'd be violating a law aimed at the operators of unlicensed day care centers."

So let me get this straight... the state isn't allowing mom's to help each other out? hmmm that really makes me wanna have kids. That really gets me upset, are women are expected to work and pay for other people to raise their kids? Is that how families and community works these days? The sad thing is this capitalist garbage is starting to be found in so many other places.

Bite me State of Michigan. Leave the mom's alone.

Another thing i came across is this video

Anyone seen it? Read the note next to the video? We talked a bit about this in one of my classes.

There needs to be more programs like this...

"For Warmth"

I hold my face in my two hands.
No, I am not crying.
I hold my face in my two hands
to keep the loneliness warm-
two hands protecting,
two hands nourishing,
two hands preventing
my soul from leaving me
in anger.
- Thich Nhat Hanh

This was a very very meaningful poem for me when i was going though some struggles in high school.  I meditated on it quite a bit, back in my junior and senior year.  Reading it again years later, it fills me with gratitude for the teachings.

I feel like this is a very meaningful poem for me at this time.

Don't listen to the poet.
In his morning coffee, there is a teardrop.

Don't listen to me.
Please don't.
In my morning coffee, there is a drop of blood.
Don't scold me, brother,
because I cannot swallow liquids.
The air in my lungs is frozen.

He said, "Let me weep through your eyes
because I no longer have eyes.
Let me walk on your feet,
because i have no feet.
With my hands
I am touching your nightmare.
He said, "I have been saved.
I need no more salvation."
Salvation is for us.

My hand on the table,
the cosmos remains silent.
The great ocean has never calmed her sobbing.
The five mountains maintain
the original positions of Sky and Earth.

Far above the Milky Way,
the secrets of the universe reveal themselves.
Yet my right hand is on the table
waiting for human kind to wake up.

No, my hand will never turn over on this table
like the half-shell
balancing on the shore,
like the corpse of a man struck down by a bullet.
Mountain and river are overthrown.
Celestial bodies are out,
and the great ocean ceases its everlasting murmur.

My hand is still on the table,
and the five mountains
still dominate.
The secret has not been revealed.
The celestial bodies go on conversing with each other.
My hand is still on the table,
waiting for the moment
to reverse the balance of Sky and Earth
my hand,
this small hand,
is like a mountain.

("we have to be very firm, very concentrated to maintain stability; otherwise we will lose our balance.")
-Thich Nhat Hanh

I had this crazy vivid dream a few nights ago. There was this giant war going on between atheists and fundamentalist christans. There wasnt a lot of destruction though, it seem like both sides were just clearly seperated, and planning out something or other. Anyway, my friend jess and i were captured and were sent to another dimension that looked a lot like Georgia. While we were there we each had to collect a basket full of these red and white colored snakes that were hanging down from trees, so we can get back in to where we came from. So jess and i go looking for tools that would help us collect these snakes, and we found this barn, there were 2 giant trucks there with the backs open and one had this really cool hat in it. Jess thought i should go try it on, i did and turned around and this old guy was standing about a foot away from me, and it was most obviously his hat. He thought it was funny that i tried it on, he told me it was too big so i put it back. Jess and i continue our search for materials to catch these snakes, and finally we find some baskets and things. We catch our bakets full of snakes and then were transported into this building that kind of reminded me of a school. It was full of fundamentalist christans and there were a bunch of tv's on, they were talking about the atheists and trying to figure out what their plan was. I remember talking with jess and a few other people who really wanted to get out of this building and cross over to find the athiests because we all thought they were smarter. Suddenly the building turned into the Mayo Hospital, where the tv's in every room were still covering this strange sort of war. The weird part about the hospital was there wernt any sick people, everyone was just kind of standing around.

It was a very strange dream. I think it was really weird how calm in the dream everyone seemed to be. Even jess and i seemed to be strangly not panicked for a war dream.

So I need to use chinese more... so here is me practicing...

"Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense." - Emerson

We should all learn how to stand on our hands, maybe then when our world turns upside down we won't fall on our ass.

I haven't been being very mindful of my arrogance lately. I made some muffins today, and in the middle of the kitchen i said something like " holy crap these are SOOOOO good!" Holy crap how arrogant is that.

I think i need to think a bit more about my arrogance level.

The other day I was walking around camups, and there were a few of those old men who were handing out bibles. They were OLD, like really old, like how are they still up walking and talking old.   As I  walked by, i over heard them talking about how they were so supprised to see so many "young folks wearing flip-flops".  They were very cheery and seemed so amused at all of us wearing flip flops i couldn't help but smile.
